Well, after winter i will be purchasing a new atv for racing. My 05 i am going to keep as a trail quad ro just get rid of it. I was wondering if the 09 yfz450r was to wide for gncc, or if 46inches of most stock 450's is a better width? Im assuming that it might be too wide, but it is a question that has been on my mind. Also ive heard rumors of a new XC yfz coming out, can anyone confirm this? Thanks in advance.

stock yes they r to wide they are 48" wide so deff 2 wide 46" is perfect as far as a xc yfz coming out i highly doubt i was reading a interview with ballance before the ironman gncc and he said they had the engine and suspension dialed in on the new yfz450R and it was a possibility he would b racing it at the ironman (he ended up not running it) the reason it was a maybe they were waiting on a ims oversize gas tank and some skids and if they got them in time they would run it but im not sure y they didnt run it probably that that reason... but that my 2cents on both subjects i could b wrong on the xc yfz but as far as the width i personally wouldnt go wider than 46.5"

you can go ahead and get the 450r if you want, im sure someone will be putting out some -1 -2 a arms, ive seen lots of people racing the lt-450r and they have narrower arms on them. if that fails, you can get offset rims that will narrow it up a little, then just be careful.

AMA rules state that the quads maximum width shall be no more than 50". I bet that Ballance is racing at about 50".

For desert, mx and worcs racing 50 is great, but in gncc xc its to wide youll end up clipping a tree. 46 is as wide as you want to go, I remember reading that yokley on his old ltz 400 was running somewhere around 43 inches wide.

Well then you would have bet wrong. He runs the ARS-FX XC a-arms that are at most +1 and then probably more than likely runs 4-1 offset rims to get back to stock width.
The setup I run is pretty much similiar except that I run Laeger XC a-arms that are +1.
I wouldn't want to run anything over 47" wide otherwise you won't fit inbetween the trees very well.

i don't now in gncc but in pro motocross you cant use a bike that is not in production yet so the yfz r is not in production and even if it is on sale now you can use it cause it is a 2009 bike for a 2008 season and you cant do that

GT Thunder has arms and HLS shocks for the new YFZ 450R for XC. The whole Yamaha Factory team is gonna be on them and they prob won't be any wider than what Bill and Brandon run now and that's around 46".....

Thanks for the update. With all the rave reviews of the YFZR. It makes it rather appealing to try one. Plus from what I've heard/ seen this quad has amazing power. Very smooth and doesn't take much to pull some more power out of it.

wasnt there a big thing between balance and some of the other guys about bill running a non production frame? they said he was cheating about using a new model frame that isnt on the yfz, maybe the was last year, i just remember reading about some serious drama about it all.

Ballance and his mechanic cut 4 YFZ450 frames where the lower a-arms mount and then they rewelded them together so he could use Motocross length lower a-arms, have the travel of a motocross shock but keep his yfz at a xc width close 2 46" it was protested by the Chris Borich camp but Ballance won the protest and kept his win. Rumor was that it was a test to see how it would work for future production yfzs. What he did was used on the YFZ450R i do believe but the Kawasaki 450 used this first here are a pic of the Kawi frame and a stock yfz frame to get you a better idea what im talkn bout

Stock YFZ frame

Stock KFX frame
If i find some pics of the chopped ballance frame ill post pics hope this explains it man

thats exactly what i was thinking of, thanks man. wasnt there some issue where GNCC slightly changed one rule and ballance took advantage of it, but none of the others even noticed the rule change? so they tried to fight it. but it was actually in the new rules that no one payed attention too??

that was the issue the protest was saying that ballance changed the way his suspension worked like the rake of it and what not by that frame change. but the gncc said that it never said you couldnt modify your atv to run longer shocks or something like that lol hope ur grasping what im saying it was the same issue but they found a loop hole in the rule to where he could modify his yfz like that

Ya and if any of you XC guys wanna chat more theres always good info on quadzone.com they have an awesome forum. But that is right when it comes to the new yfz frame. you can tell how in the a arms sit. But it should be an awesome machine once it gets all the stuff dialed in. I cant wait to see it perform this coming year.
