So, I'm still in high school and on Saturday was at a track meet in the town where I live. I'm a thrower and had the best meet of my life, beeting my personal best by three feet in the shot put.
Now I don't go to school in this town but live there, so just met my team at the meet.
My dad called me when I was warming up for the finals and told me that my cows were out.
So as soon as I was done with my events I loaded up my YFZ and went to chase them in. I was going through my pasture and went to go through a gate opening. Now I have had this gate open for five years, and nobody has ever shut it. I don't know who, but someone, instead of shuting the gate, which I would have seen, ran two wires across the gate for some unknown reason.
Anyways, I wasn't wearing a helmet for the first time ever, and hit the gate about mid range in third gear. I saw the wire and stood up so it didn't take my head off. The wire that caught me didn't break and pulled my off of my quad. I landed on my head, but being a big ol farm boy I have a hard head and it didn't hurt my head. I felt fine so I tried to jump on my quad and take off again. As I tried to pull my clutch I realized there was something wrong with my left arm.
I took my cut and bloody shirt off to find that my bicept was pinched in half. I immediately went home, and decided that the bicept was not torn, so didn't go to the hospital. I went the day after to have it looked at. The x rays show that it was basically pinched in half, but didn't tear the muscle. The muscle is slowly coming back to shape, but I'm pretty sore, not to mention lucky. The arm was the worst with a bunch of cuts across my chest and bruises from the wire.
I'll always check my gates now because you never know if someone who wasn't supposed to be there did something with you're gates.

Yeah, I should be back on the quad within the next week or two. The muscle is getting it's shape back, but it hurts like hell. I tried to lift some light weight with it last night and it still isn't very strong, but yeah it was pretty sick looking.

Got back on the quad today. My arm is a little sore but the muscle has got alot of it's shape back. Didn't ride to much, just around my machinery lot to see if my arm would allow it and to load it up and get it back to my house instead of my ranch

I know a guy that my Uncle used to ride with who almost got decapitated by a barbed wire fence at Winchester Bay in Oregon about 15 years ago. He was roosting my Uncle and looked back to see the damage and got close lined by the old boundary fence. He had to be life flighted out of the dunes and almost died. So I would say you got real lucky you saw it!

Yeah, I know of a guy who died when he hit a cable gate as well. The cable hit him in the chest, ripping his heart loose and he died on the spot. He had two little girls at home and was (like most of us) just out unwinding from a long week. BTW, never, ever, ever get on a bike or quad without at LEAST a helmet. One of the guys I work with only wears a helmet when he's planning on riding hard (his words). I told him, "that's fine, you don't have anything to protect with a helmet anyway". It hurt his feelings, but guess what? He started wearing one, at least when he rides with me.

We had a family friend who was riding her motorcycle with her husband and got clotheslined by a wire on the street and was decapitated almost completely...freak accident. Tragic and we miss her greatly.
Also my dad has a coworker who was riding through and orchard and a twig went through his goggles and stabbed him in the forhead and almost left him blind.
One of my old friends from back in the day...was riding in 2nd gear and just doing doughnuts...no helmet...his quad caught some traction and now he is a vegetable...be careful...VERY careful.
