Went riding at Florence after a 9 plus hour trip(3hours setting up friends bike) and broke my radius in 30 minutes. I didn't see a 6 foot drop off and landed hard on the front wheels which overloaded my wrist. Luckily we brought an auto quad with us or i would have been walking a few miles. I went to the hospital and they tried to set it but ended up referring me to a surgeon. The fracture was about 3" up from my wrist and according to the DR. I needed a titanium plate and screws. I'm about 3weeks and 3days past the surgury now and was wondering if anyone else has had this injury/surgery? They didn't put a cast or anything, just a wrist guard with velcro straps. It feels pretty good now but my motion is limited and the wrist has a little swelling still. The DR. says 8weeks, but with the snowmobiling season coming I'm not sure about that. Anyone tell me about there recovery would be great. Thanks.

just be glad it was only 6'.. my friend went off a 25' by accident in Glamis.. not a pretty picture

you can allways get a second medical opinion about the injury and treatment you received..

well i had the surgery a little over 3 weeks ago, and was wondering if anyone else had gone through this? i didn't have to get a hard cast, just a wrist guard with velcro straps, which i remove often. I lost alot of wrist motion and was curious if this is normal. It doesn't seem like its ever gonna be the same. Thanks. Btw how's your buddy doing?

he is ok.. now.. but I know how easy it is to go off drops.. watched a number of riders do in in Glamis and some had to visit the ER. Especially difficult with flat light in the middle of the day and no shadows..

if you feel like you are having problems and the doctor doesn't provide you with answers that you think are legitimate... get a second opinion from another qualified specialist.

Are they going to remove the hardware they installed or leave it? That may be what is limiting your movement??

best advise I can give you is to research on the net about the type of surgery you have had and educate yourself before getting some second opinions so you are better at comprehending what the medical professionals are talking about if/when you do meet with them.

Labor day weekend at pismo my friend flew over probably a 6 foot drop off too and when he landed he bit a whole in his tongue. It looked really bad and he was spitting up blood for a while but he was able to ride back to camp.

i wish it was just a hole in my tongue. The plate and screws stay in there, unless it really bugs me. I'm gonna get some wrist guards and some bushings in the handlebars, which hopefully helps. Snowmobiling season is coming soon too!

i did a similar thing last weekend, i overjumped a tabletop and shattered my radius and dislocated the other bone at the wrist joint.

i had the surgery 2 days ago, i got a plate from my wrist to my elbow with about 20 screws. ive only got a bandage on- no plaster.

doc said i'll be fine but no riding for 7 months

sounds alot worse then mine. day after surgery sucks! my wrist joint at the time felt fine, but now i notice it clicks a little and is still swolen 3 1/2 weeks later. which arm did you break?

We went for the first time in April and I went off a 3' drop following Doc Rahman going back to camp... I got lucky and got bucked off my bike. I didnt get injured thank god but I was sore for a little while. shocker.gif

allot will see the drop, brake..and then nose dive which even makes it worse upon impact
nickracer9
thats what i did! i was going maybe 15mph, tried to slow down and landed hard on the front tires. My hand was still attached to the grip, had to pull it off with my other hand. i'm hoping some wrist guards and dampening in the handlebars will help. any ideas??

I would really try to ride the dunes slower with more turns until you feel more comfortable with the hidden drops.. or find someone that really rides them well and follow them to learn better techniques and improve your ability to read the dunes and know where the drops may be.

I remember my first trip to Glamis 4 years ago. A line of 10 YFZ's were following a guy that grew up riding Glamis and he went off about a 8 to 10' ledge without even thinking about it... I was behind him and hammered it and fortunately landed OK.. as for the rest.. next guy braked.. and landed front end down. Bent his handlebars and bruised his ribs. But he land next to dead stop. Next guy landed on the back of his quad and damaged the internals of his neck from hitting the bars. We had to take him in to the Yuma hospital because he was having problems breathing. He stayed in ER during the evening and then had to have some sort of surgery for the injury. I bet if you did a search you may even find our posts from about 4 years ago on this site mentioning the accident. Levi (Merriman) on this site was leading the pack.
