Depends on how much you want to spend.
Anything from TCS/Elka to Fox/Axis/Ohlins/Motowoz/Stadium/PEP are VERY good shocks. As long as any of these shocks are set for you they will be great for XC racing.
As for Zero Preload, at one time it was the hot item for XC racing but it was a fad for the XC guys as most have just switched over to a dual or triple rate setup. Zero Preload will lower the quad meaning the frame is sitting lower (not what you want for XC). All of the above shocks are ride height adjustable. Yes you want that, the only way to properly set up your suspension is if the front is set up slightly higher than the rear (1/4" or so).
I have used TCS and they worked very good over stock suspension, but I have just ordered Fox Evols for my new a arms.
I would personally go with Fox/Axis or Stadiums, but have no experience at all with Motowoz or PEP.

I currently run Elka fronts and a GT Thunder revalve for the rear. If your new to racing and want to save some $$ and still get a great suspension set up then contact GT Thunder and send your stock front and rear shocks to them and have them do thier magic. You can get front and rear shocks linkage and atv fourplay a arms all for about $1600. thats about what you would pay for a set of elkas just for the front .

ARS FX shocks are in production, you need to get in line to get them right now, but that should calm down soon. They will be the best shock out there. The fronts are piggy back, no high low speed because no one can figure that out, rear is a supercross style shock with the largest body in the market. More oil, cooler running shock and more room for valving. Contact me to place an order. Also available in MX lengths.

I highly recommend the GT Thunder setup all the way around. They have an entire front end kit available that is nearly ideal for XC. They also have a kit for the rear. Just send your stock shocks to Laz, and youll get back reworked shocks with dual rate springs and modified valving, A-arms tierods etc. and a rear link.

Brandon and Taylor are not running revalves, they are running the piston kit as well, which almost cost the same money as buying aftermarket shocks anyway. If that was the way to go, Bill would be running it. I have a new set of arms coming with axis shocks and also a ars fx rear linkage for a stock swingarm with a axis shock.
