After telling half you guys how to connect your kill switch to the solid white wire, this way is disabled when you install a vortex cdi.
So I've worked out a better way that works for both cdi.
Follow the wires up from the oil filler plug (four wires) to just before the first connector (under the hood) the wires separate into pairs.
Pick the white/red pair and splice the longest wire out of the kill switch into the white wire and the short wire from the k/switch into the red wire.
No need to earth any wire.
Good luck, Geoff.

It is great, we haven't done much testing due to a broken collar bone. but my mechanic was very imppressed with the difference it made.

Good info, Geoff...thanks.....I am going to rewire mine since I have the Vortex X10 installed now. I only tried out #1 on the box, but I was very happy with it. With the Vortex, and 13:1 piston; this quad is much improved. Low end torque is very noticeable...I jumped from my quad to other YFZ's without the 13:1 and I and them; could definitely tell the difference......JIM

Geoff, how ya going, i get the impression you have just connected the kill switch across the two wires that go to the coil? The dealership here on the Gold Coast still hasn't got my bike in yet so i cannot look at it.

Im having trouble finding the white and red wires, do you have to split the case around the bundle of wires to find it? Any pics would be much appreciated. thanks

you must do it differently with a dyna and pro design, the dyna will come with instructions on how to wire it

Hi you guys. I'm from Portugal and just traded my '02 Banshee for a '04 YFZ 450. As the dealership didn't gave me any more cash for the upgrades and aftermerket stuff I had on the Banshee, I took almost everything from it that I could use in the 450. One of the things was the kill switch, but now I have a little problem. I cutted the wires of the KS the same lenght, so I don't know witch one is longer or shorter. My question is, if I connect that thing the wrong way, won't I be destroying something? Or it simply doesn't work?
Thanks for the help. Dam, this is my first post here and already starting to ask questions... Sorry you guys!

Which wire should be longer? I'm replacing my stator, and would like to re-use the kill switch. The problem is that I cut my wires, and no longer know which wire is supposed to be the "long" one. Any help would be much appreciated!

i dont think it matters which wire is long and which one is short!
all the kill switch is doing is making and breaking a circuit, i might be wrong but i dont think it matters1

hey, i just bought a kill switch and i was looking for better direction on how to hook up my killswitch. i got to thinking what keeps you from just hooking it or splicing it into your stock kill switch wires because that all they do is make and break a circuit. would that work? it would be quicker too because its right next to where the handle bars would mount.

you could wire it into the on/off button

this would only work with the normally closed type killswitch because the stock on/off is backwards to the pro design type. ie, when the switch is on the circuit is completed, to turn the bike off it opens up the circuit. the pro design completes/shorts a circuit to turn it off.

arent all the kill switchs about the same. i have some off brand one but i think it is the same. so that is the only way i can put on a killswitch, not by the stock killswitch? sorry if i confused you.

what is called a normally closed and normally open... because of work im used to thinking of something an normally open or normally closed in a de-energyzed state. meaning that the kill switch would be normally closed or normally open with out the teather attached (if you were to fall off).
not sure if this applies here or if you refer to normally closed as in when you are riding.
thanks

right on...
normally closed means that with the tether in the switch, the circuit is complete and when you pull the cord, it breaks the circuit.
normally open is revers of that.
the pro design, and copies, are normally open.

are you guys tapping into the wires or cutting them and connecting only to the wires coming from the motor

Depends on how you're installing it.. Describe how you're installing it.
bucky19
Jul 22 2009, 02:14 PM
installing using directions in first post. just dont know whether to cut the wires or simply tap into them. i assume tap into them.
-Justin-
Jul 22 2009, 03:04 PM
That method would be best to just tap into them. No need to cut them just to re-solder them back together..
I just finished installing my Pro-Design switch on mine this way, although with a Dyna Programable CDI.. Same deal..

I sold my engine and bought a new engine, now I'm trying to hook up my kill switch and for some reason I have a light blue wire tapped into the longer wire which then goes to a ground. And I think I had the shorter wire hooked up to the white wire. I'm trying to figure out where that light blue wire is supposed to go so that I can wire it up the proper way with the white and red wires.

hey guys, i just got a 2009 yfz 450r a few months ago, and now comes time to install the kill switch. i followed a link to this thread and was wondering if this same method will work for the new 2009 450r's or if it is different for the new yfz-r's..
Thanks!
