The weekend is over and Monday I gotta work...I just want to post a little bit about my weekend trip and the really first trip since last september when I had double carpel tunnel wrist surgery.
The weather for that area was:
Friday- rain and thunderstorms with 1 1/4 of rain with a high of 50 low of 38
Saturday- raina and thundersotrms with a high of 50 low of 40
Sunday -rain and chance of Snow
Not having much of a choice if I wanted to go since I was staying in a hoytel room sleeping on the floor with 4 other people. I packed up and brought extra clothes and coats for the cold wet weather ahead of me.
I got there about 11:30 and thought, well hell its not going to rain it looks cloudy and cold but thats it. The rest of the group meets me at the hotel at noon, and about 12:15 after tossing the stuff in the room it starts to rain. All hopes of running the new web cams and sand tires in my bike are going down the drain.
Get to the gate, at 12:30 stops raining and unload everything, go for a ride. The dunes are not that wet after a shocking surpirse! The weather there was really dry for several weeks and the rain didn't soak into the sand as we figured it would. Roughly 30 mins later we go back and give the old farts of the camp the report and eat some burgers and food off the grill and tune on the new bike for the weather. 53'f and 70% humidty.
After playing around all day about 3-4pm the weather turns from hellish looking to a blue sky and calm as hell. Me being from Northern Michigan and living on or near Lake Michigan for my whole life, I have NEVER seen Lake Michigan calm as it was. It was the lake was Frozen and not a wave. The sky was blue and the dunes went from virgin sand to tracks all over the place as more people starting to come in. The sand went from top 3-5" of being wet to dry and clsoe to 63'f 30% and no wind. Close to the end of the day we start agian on tuning the new bike in but the DNR said it was over 107 db and it hurt it poor ears from 200 feet away so we had to stop.
After getting the voucher (first weekend for them) Saturady morning I was the first one in the gate at 7:00am and the weather was cold, wet (rain last night) and foggy as hell. Not sure if they would allow us in the dunes due to the fog we started to eat and let the weather clear up a bit. Got in my cousins truck went for a ride and buried it to the door on the first hill- 45 mins later after hand digging it out with no luck we got back after a stock jeep yanked on it two times well backing down the hill- no more screwing around for the kids...
this is a pic of the fog at 6:55am, by 8am it was so bad I doubt you could see where the raod was if you where driving.
noon time rolls around the weather is really nice, kind cold, and a little windy but not bad at all. We take the race bikes out to race and clean up with the alky banshee, there was no other drag bikes there, 1st time for it being the fastes bike at silver lake. As for the other new bike we couldn't get it running right and the dne land store didn't have the right size jets we needed, but learned several things on it to make it better.
noon time rolls to 4:45 as the sky turn from light blue with a few clouds and about 55'f to dark rain clouds windy with rain. We pack up head to the hotel calling it a trip. They had a drag contest on sunday that we didn't stay for since we all kinda wanted to get home. Dead start up a hill that they only use 2 times a year. I didn't have my camera at the time, but I saw several buggys there testing and tunning for it witrh LS1 motors, a truck with bull dozer tracks called "top gun" and a few pretty sweet trucks. All in all it was a great trip and if you didn't go becasue the weather...I feel bad for you, it was great about 85% of the time and most of the rain was at night or late in the day.
When I get done typing a ride report after doing my mods I will add it
