you should be fine. Call the MI DNR and get silver lake information. For that weekend you'll need to get Vouchers which is a pain. Do a yahoo search for silver lake MI sand dunes and call as many places as possible. What you want is a DNR phone number, but I don't have it off the top of my head.

You may not get sound checked but you will DEFINITELY get checked for a spark arrestor. Earnhard can fill ya in on that.

At the main gate they pull you over in a group of 3-5 and check for sund and if your sounding really loud they'll pull you over and check you. Too be on the smart side what everyone does is as soon as they see the testing to be started go after they have 5 or more bikes waiting to be tested or wait a good few mins when there is no line after the coas is done with and they won't even check you.

As for a sparky they check that on every bike every time, towards the end of the day if your bike really stands out and the same person is there he will kinda lean over but he knows the bike and lets you go. If they are unsure they'll ask you or look for the stamp. On my hmf the I have the core screen sticking out since there is no stamp and a blind fool can see it. They alos have a stick to push in a pipe to see if there is a screen or baffel.

THANKS ILL CALL ALBA AND SEE IF THEY HAVE A CORE I CAN BUY OR I MIGHT MAKE ONE

The only way they check is randomly... i got pulled over with my YZ250 with a Tubrine Core on it... that is us forestry approved and spark arrested. I blew a 94dB which is the limit in Michigan. The only way they check your muffler is by the name, they pulled my numberplate (i thought they were gonna break it off) and checked which one it was then let me go. You should be fine unless your the unlucky one they check. The past 4 times ive been there ive been checked once, and only one other person in my group has gotten checked. If you end up getting checked and test over 94, wait for a lil bit if you realy have to, the person that checked you has to go on break sometime... thats what my friend did cuz he tested about 109 lol. He almost went in the exit just to get in hahaha.

If you can help it, just make sure you can pass so you dont have to worry about it. Plus try to make yourself blend in more, ride with a person (that has a legal pipe) and ride on the far side from the booth, they are real lazy up there, and dont usually walk out of the way ha.

Your gonna enjoy your weekend so much your gonna want to go back every weekend, TRUST ME! i was where your at a couple years ago, the first time you get in there your just in awe... and i plan on going atleast a half a dozen times this year.

Looking to go to Silver Lake the second weekend in June... anyone in?
Can anyone tell me how it is set up for camping, can you stay close enough to the dunes that you do not have to move your whole rig to go riding.

Here is a few nice links for you:

http://www.atvillustrated.com/feature_arti...ages/orvmap.JPG

that is a map of the dunes.

the parking lot is where you park your truck/trailer to unload to go into the dunes. A trailer can't be pulled into the dunes, but you can't put a cooler (with no glass/beer) in your truck as well as your quad and driving into the dunes.

http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-1...34760--,00.html

this link will tell you more than anything you want to know. MAKE SURE you read about vouchers, that will ruin your trip if you DON'T understand!!! I'm not B.S. HERE CALL THEM READ this----> click here<--- do whatever you have to do just make sure you understand.

As for camping its cheaper than getting a hotel like I do. There is a jelly stone park there thats about 1 mile north east to the area to get into the dunes here is the camping link for them ----->http://www.silverlakejellystone.com <---

there is others as well here is a list, some are close and some are not http://www.discoveroceana.com/fall/campgrounds.html

As for your orginal question, its hard not having to move your whole rig. Such as a trailer. If you have a camper/tent -leave it at the camp site and put anything worth $$ in the truck or trailer and take it with you. Theft isn't big at all but better safe than sorry.

Here is a overveiw of the area to get you a better understanding of the area. I suggest you print it.

(((click the pink box's for a zoom in for the dunes, rules or camping locations...The campground in there isn't jelly stone- and this one in the picture above is a little more tough on the rules I hear)))

hope I helped

Awesome info Earnhard3.

If anybody wants to plan a trip for the second weekend in August, I will probably go then, so it would be cool to meet some of the riders from the site. I've never ridden in the dunes so it would be cool to meet someone who has ridden there before and knows where they are going and what to watch out for. So let me know it you guys and gals want to plan a ride for that weekend at Silverlake.
Earnhard3
I'll look into that date, I have 3 weddings this summer and one is my brothers. I have 4 trips planned there already right now so I dunno if I can get anymore fridays off... mhihi.gif

It would be cool to ride with someone who has been there already and knows the area. I would probably end up leaving on Thursday after work and getting there late Thursday night or early Friday morning. After waking up, go riding all day Friday and maybe into the night, all day Saturday and probably a half a day on Sunday since I'll have long drive home and all.
I'm going to talk to some of my friends that ride and my brother and his friends that ride if they want to go. I would like to start making reservations here pretty soon.
So lets see if we can get a group ride going and have a hell of a good time.
Earnhard3
you can't ride at night there, I think as late as 8 or 9pm. I get there friday around noon time, stay till sunday and leave at 9-10am saturday morning with the rest of my group
