Run real light oil in winter and heavier oil in summer, say 5w20 winter 20w50 summer. Thats what I run. I've heard of people running to heavy of oil in the winter and when its real cold the oil pump doesn't want to move when the engine is cold so it gets ripped out of the case area that holds it in. Expensive if that happens. Summer you can run any weight oil most people run the heavier stuff including me. The machine takes almost two quarts. When I do a oil and filter change, I put one quart, 12 oz in the tank and 8 oz in the motor, run it for a little bit check it and add oil if its low.
Another thing when checking the oil don't screw the dipstick back in. Take it out, wipe oil off and put it in and recheck.
Just ask if you have any other questions, lots of us that have lots of info.

I run a 0W-40 synthetic all year long. Starts great all the time, and has a 40W protection during running. I run my quad from freezing conditions to 110 degree weather. I personally prefer a bit more than a 20W running condition oil to minimize oil destabilization and foaming tendencies. The amount of HP gain by using a 20W running condition viscosity versus a 40W or 50W viscosity is negligible and maybe only detectable on a dyno. Just my 2 cents.

I run 20w50 year round but yet I live in So Cal and we do not see freezing weather here where I live.
