my buddy went riding a few days ago, I wasnt there but he told me a pretty detailed story about what happened. This is the second time i've seen it happen on an R:
stopped for a break, went to go start it up, waited for the FI to run on and stuff, strted it up, drove about 10 feet, it popped sputtered like it was bogging then died. It didnt start after that. They had to push it 3 hours down a trail.
He only has the pea shooter pulled, and airbox lid off i believe. It went thru a half a race season if that helps. Has a Pro Armour kill switch.
This is the second time i've seen this happen to an R. Another time at the races, except when he shut his off, it just never
restared.
EDIT: it never tried cranking over. Like the battery was dead.
any help guys? Has this happened to anybody else?

mine did that. but it wasnt the spark plug. the positve wire conecting to the battery. that metal clip on the end of the wire just broke. no signs of bending. good clean break. it boged and sputtered for about 15 sec. then died... check the battery leads.

The positive lead is a known problem.
Just check it all the time for flexing.
Look for yamaha to put out a resistor kit soon, so if it does break on a ride the quad will still run. Shouldn't be much longer ;)

Mine did kind of the same thing, but the check engine light started blinking.
The part of the wire harness that snakes through the frame on the left, under the tank and up by the upper shock mount, had rubbed through and shorted some wires.

when he turns the key on, nothing comes up. Does that help.
I told him today that it was the battery leads but he says there good. Now i dont know if he checked the right spot or not.

It could still be shorted out wires. Check the whole system.
Take a look at the coil and see if it looks abnormal.
