I want to narrow mine up, and wouldn't be surprised if the old yfz450 axle is the same on there using on the new X model??
DADDIO
A YFZ axle is slightly different.
You can put YFZ hubs on your R to make it about 2" narrower, though.
carfanatic
really?? the hubs narrow it?

Part of the YFZR's extra width comes from having offset hubs.
Here is the difference in axles.
YFZR = 18P-25381-00-00
YFZX = 46D-25381-00-00
YFZ = 5D3-25381-00-00

your going to have to help me out cause I dont know what those mean.. are those part numbers?

I want to run the houser XC front a arms and narrow up the rear. I was going to purchase the X rear axel, but maybe its the same axle, just the different hubs?

Sorry........ Those are part numbers for the axle. They all have different Yamaha part numbers.

However, the YFZ450X and the regular YFZ share the same part number for the hub itself. I have not seen an "X" axle yet, but it looks like the axle for the "X" is the same width as a YFZ axle, but is different in the carrier area.

ah ok... do you think the x axel runs the same hubs as the R? if so I'll just order the X axel... unless you think I can achieve the same goal with just swaping hubs..

By looking at the overall widths and comparing part numbers, I think that if you use YFZR hubs on a YFZX axle, you would be close to the same width as using YFZ hubs on a YFZR axle.

It would be cheaper to just buy used YFZ hubs. If that still isn't narrow enough, then get the YFZX Axle.

Or just buy a Lonestar XC axle for the YFZR.
carfanatic
the aftermarket axles are like double the price of a stock one..

is the yfz hubs, the same bolt pattern? Have you run them on your R?

The are the same bolt pattern and the splines are the same. I have a set of YFZ hubs that I slipped on our YFZR to see if they fit, but I never needed to run them. We need to be close to 50".
carfanatic
ah, cool. any idea what they measure in at with the yfz hubs on?

It is possible to run the the old YFZ axle in the YFZR. But you have to also change to an old style carrier, and use the old brake and sprocket hubs.
carfanatic
I just order the X axle before I did all that!

No........ I never measured it.......... Find a buddy with a YFZ and do a little swaping.

I need to look at the parts pages and compare the X and R part numbers.. that would help alot!
pondy
all the part numbers are the same, the fist 3 is a model number
carfanatic
so then your saying they all use the same axle?? the difference is in the hubs?

The middle part of the number is telling you that it's an axle. The first part is the model.
Put them together, and that equals the specs for that axle.

No............... they are not the same.

gotcha!

any way you can find the part numbers of the hubs to see if there the same? then you would know the difference is the axle between the R and X model.

I already did, but I didn't post the part numbers, because it seemed to confuse you when I posted the axle part numbers.
The YFZ and YFZX use the same part number for the hubs.

Go to Yamaha-motor.com and go to the parts section, and you can compare part numbers for yourself.
pondy
i understand you added the model of bike they are for, i was meaning that the 18p, 46d, 5d3, this is the model number, the rest of the numbers are the same

but the rest of the number just means it's an axle. It doesn't mean they are the same.

You will also have to buy the "X" hubs to be the same width as the YFZ450X.

To save a little coin, just buy a set of used YFZ hubs and try them. If you still need to be narrower, then buy the X axle.

If you wait a little while, I'm sure there will be "take-off" X axles for sale, as racers start getting these and put aftermarket axles in them.
carfanatic
didn't you say the R and X use the same hubs?? so why would I have to buy them?

Yup............ Now go find yourself some YFZ hubs.
carfanatic
sweet I will try the hubs out first! and if they arent enough I'll get the X axle

Thanks for the help!
