Guys, Im trying to setup my 450R to handle a 100mile dessert race, currently Im running a 12.5 compression piston Im wondering if I downgrade to a stock 11 would be more reliable and gentler on the engine. Furthermore does anyone make or know how to install an oil cooler on a 450R?

Well, a lower compression piston is typically more reliable than a high-compression piston. A lot of desert racers run stock compression because the engine is more likely to stay together and cranking for those long, hard desert miles.
I haven't seen anything about oil coolers for the R but am curious myself. I believe PWR makes a unit for the KFX that looks like the kind of set up that might work on the R, only problem is where to mount it on the radiator.

being a wet sump motor, i dont think you can hook up an oil cooler but dont quote me on it.
I think as long as your moving and not revving the piss out of it, i think you'll be fine.

PWR? who are they..
Does anyone know how to wire an overide switch on the fan control on the radiator, that way I can turn the fan on as I approach technical sections.

PWR has a stage 3 radiator for the YFZ's that has an integrated oil cooler. It says they are available for 03 to 08 models. Call them and see if they have made one for the YFZR yet. I am sure that if they have them for other years then they will or do for this too. We put one in a customers 06 YFZ with fantastic results.

Hey, Just got off the phone with PWR, basically the oil cooler pumps the oil out from the oil filter cover, he says he hasnt seen a 450R however if they use the same part for the oil filter cover then it would work.
I know the yfz and R both use same oil fitlers.... so Do they use the same cover :S

The YFZ and YFZR share the same part number for the covers.
As far as the fan, just wire a switch into the two leads from the fan sending.

They mount differently, but you may be able to make it work with a welder or brackets.

We have one of those stage III radiators in stock for the 04-08 YFZ450. PWR makes them for DMC. I have the normal PWR radiator mounted to my YFZ450 with no issues to date. I think i've had my PWR radiator for 3 years.

Thanks, Daddio,
How does the R radiator compare to the YZF motocross bike, also is it the same oil filter cover?
Thanks

The oil filter covers are the same, but the dirt bike has 2 radiators.
