Well my cousin has a 04 yfz450 that he never rides. Its completely stock and I have ridden the bike more than he has and the last time I rode it I took it to a local track and fell in love with it. Im used to racing dirt bikes but never had a quad that just felt so right on the track. Anyways, I live in San Luis Obispo, CA next to Pismo, but I would rather take it to tracks around here. Anyways the situation is the bike hasn't been maintained well. I think hes had it serviced once before, but I am really wanting to bring the bike up with me (im in college) and be able to ride it.
I was just wondering what the going price at dealerships are to have them service it and maybe even check and adjust the valves. If it was my own bike I would tear into the top end, but being it isnt mine I feel much safer having a dealer doing it.
Thanks.

the old bad thing about u using it is wht if she drops a valve or blows, your dealers is prolly 72 TO 100 bucks a hour

Ya thats one thing im slightly nervous about. Its fun to ride, im not too hard on it, but on a truck you gotta get on it a bit... I was just thinking about borrowing it and possibly buying it off him, but id hate to get stuck with the bill if something happened. One reason why I thought getting valves adjusted would prevent that.

service is simple, change the oil, clean the air filter...
if you want the valves checked/adjusted, its a fairly simple process once you understand it, read up and see if its something you can handle, other wise it will probably be a couple hundred for the stealership to do your valves...
talk to your cousin about setting up a simple payment plan and buy the bike from him, dont borrow it, if you start running into issues, and he wants it fixed, it can easily come between you two, ruin a friendship, etc. its best to work it out to avoid any issues.

Thats not a bad idea. Whats the going rate for these bikes? I figure it wouldnt be bad to get this bike since I have seen everything its been through and what not. But ya its either a 04/05. Heres a pic of it:

very clean bike.
It was only $60 for my dealer to do it. I call it a dealer and not a stealer cuz i very much like my dealer. Sure they charge $100/hr, but its good work for the most part. But i cant see anymore then $100 to do a valve set. I can get mine done in about an hour and 15 mins. I like to take my time and make sure everthing is right though.

05 special edition, talk to him, ask him what he would like, id see if you can work him down to 2000, bikes are selling real cheap, and he never rides it. lol, plus he is your cousin!!

Ya I would like to get it off him cheap. Im in college right now so I can maybe give him payments until summer time work... My buddy threw up an idea, I kinda would feel bad about borrowing his quad and something happening, but maybe work out a "renting" sort of situation. Say pay him 20 bucks or so a month and then if something happens ill help him pay or buy it off him... Just a thought, id like to get it definitely... I just love how this bike ran and felt on the track, even rode it compared to a suzuki 450 and honda 450 and I felt it was the best feeling bike

Another thing I wanted to ask, I was talkin to a bud on my gm forum and he asked what was done to the quad. I told him my cousin pulled the baffle and thats it. He said the bike is running lean then and I need to rejet it and he mentioned about the header glowing red, which I did notice at night.
So he mentioned getting the "yz needle" and jet it from the 3rd clip from the top. Think he threw up the numbers 150 main and 48 pilot since we live in the same area (hes so cal and im cen cal) and same year of yfz. Just curious if any central coast guys could pitch in on that. Never jetted too much except my cr500 a few times so if you all could help me there. thanks.

Very clean bike, if you can rent it for a $20.00 dollars a month thats a steal, considering to rent a 450 for a day here in AZ is $120-175 a DAY.

It was easy on my cr500 and yz125 just never messed with four strokers, another thing is its not my bike so lil hesitant on just tearing it apart. Do you all adjust the valves yourself or have a dealer do it? I figure with the right place and time it can be done, just with college usually busy... Maybe when I go home I can do it then...

Also called dealership here in slo, they quoted me 150 bucks for adjusting valves. Then like 120 to rejet it since my cousin has the stock baffle out. I forgot to even ask about the cam mod. I figured throw in the stock baffle and just not have to worry about rejet. What you all think?
